How to schedule Instagram posts (Reels, carousels, and photos)
Instagram scheduling used to require a third-party tool. It doesn't anymore — Meta built it into Business Suite — but the native option comes with limits that show up fast once Instagram is a real channel for you. Here are both ways to do it, and the exact ceilings on each.
First: you need a Professional account
This is the one requirement that trips people up. Instagram only allows scheduled publishing — native or through any third-party tool — from a Professional account (Business or Creator). Personal accounts can't schedule at all.
Converting is free, takes about a minute in Settings → Account type and tools → Switch to professional account, and doesn't change how your profile looks to followers. Do this first or nothing below will work.
Option 1: schedule in Meta Business Suite (free)
Meta Business Suite is Meta's own tool for Facebook and Instagram. It schedules Instagram feed posts, carousels, and Reels at no cost:
- Open business.facebook.com (or the Business Suite mobile app) and make sure your Instagram account is connected.
- Click Create post (or Create reel), and pick your Instagram account as the destination.
- Build the post — upload your image, carousel, or video, write the caption, add your first comment, and tag as needed.
- Choose a schedule instead of publishing now, then pick the date and time.
That's the whole flow, and for a single account it's genuinely fine. The limits:
- About 75 days ahead, max. You can't plan a full quarter.
- Instagram and Facebook only. If the same content is going to TikTok, YouTube, or LinkedIn, you're rebuilding it in each app.
- No cross-account batching across brands in a clean calendar view — the planner is workable but basic.
- No AI, captions, or best-time scoring. It publishes; it doesn't help you make the content.
If Instagram is your one channel, stop here — Business Suite covers it.
Option 2: schedule with a dedicated tool
A dedicated scheduler is worth it when Instagram is one of several platforms, or when you want to batch a month in one sitting and have it slotted into the times your audience actually engages.
Here's the flow in Schedulin's Instagram scheduler:
- Connect your Instagram Professional account once through Instagram's official login. Your account and posting permissions sync automatically.
- Create your post. Upload a photo, a carousel, or a Reel; write your caption; add a first comment for hashtags; and set the cover frame for video.
- Pick a time — or let Smart Queue pick. Schedule manually, or drop it into the highest-engagement open slot based on your own last 90 days of data.
- Cross-post in the same step. Send the same content to TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn, Facebook, and more from one composer, tailored per platform.
One rule that matters: only use a tool that publishes through Instagram's official Graph API. Anything automating the app itself puts your account at risk. Schedulin publishes exclusively through Meta's official API, as any legitimate scheduler does.
Which should you use?
Use Meta Business Suite if Instagram (and maybe Facebook) is your whole world and you're happy planning inside Meta's tools. Move to a dedicated scheduler the moment you're posting to more than Instagram, want to plan further than 75 days out, or want AI and best-time scheduling doing some of the work.
