How to use these caption templates

  1. Pick the template that matches the post's goal β€” announce, educate, prove, or sell.
  2. Copy it and replace every {placeholder} with specifics. Real numbers, names, and dates beat adjectives.
  3. Rewrite the first line until it would make you stop scrolling. That line does most of the work.
  4. Add 3–5 relevant hashtags if the platform uses them, then check the length against the table below.

A caption formula that works on any platform

Most strong captions follow the same three-part shape. The templates above are short versions of it:

  1. Hook:a first line that makes a promise or raises a question. "We almost didn't ship this" works better than "Excited to announce".
  2. Value: the one thing you want people to know β€” the tip, the story, the result, the offer.
  3. Call to action: a single next step: comment, save, share, or click the link.

Caption length limits by platform (2026)

The limit is the most you can write. The visible column is how much people see before the platform cuts it off, which is why the first line matters so much.

PlatformCharacter limitVisible before truncation
Instagram2,200About 125 before β€œmore”
TikTok4,000A line or two over the video
LinkedIn3,000About 140–210 before β€œsee more”

Which caption template should you use?

  • Announcements and launches: for new products, features, hires, or milestones. Lead with what changes for the reader, not with how excited you are.
  • Testimonials:let a customer's words carry the post. Quote them exactly and name them (with permission).
  • Educational tips: the most saveable format. Number the tips and keep each one short.
  • Behind the scenes: builds trust between promotions. Show process, people, and mistakes.
  • Engagement questions: easy-to-answer questions get more replies than open-ended ones.
  • Promotions: state the offer, the deadline, and where to go. Keep these to a minority of your posts.

Check your final caption against every network at once with the character counter, and add tags from the hashtag collections.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good social media caption?

A first line that earns the tap, one clear idea, and one next step. Everything else β€” emoji, hashtags, line breaks β€” is formatting. If you can't say what the post is for in one sentence, the caption won't either.

How long should a caption be?

Long enough to do its job. Short captions work for strong visuals and entertainment; longer, story-style captions work for education and LinkedIn. What matters most is the first line, because most platforms cut the rest behind a 'more' link.

Can I use the same caption on every platform?

You can start from the same caption, but trim it for each network: X, Threads, and Bluesky have short limits, LinkedIn rewards a professional tone, and TikTok captions sit over the video. Schedulin lets you write once and adjust per platform before scheduling.

Should captions include a call to action?

Most should, but only one. Ask for a comment, a save, a click, or a share β€” not all four. Match it to the goal: comments for engagement, link clicks for traffic, saves for educational posts.

Are these caption templates free to use?

Yes. Copy, edit, and use them anywhere, including for clients. No sign-up or attribution needed.
